HAPPANING SHORTLISTED FOR STARTUP AWARDS NATIONAL SERIES

Happaning has been named one of the most exciting new businesses in the region after being shortlisted as part of a brand new awards programme.

[London, UK] — [6th April 2022] Happaning, the only media platform that allows users to create, share and consume immersive stories using our ViiVid® (Multi-Vantage Video) technology has secured a finalist position in the ‘London & East of England Mobile & Emerging Technologies StartUp Category’.

The StartUp Awards National Series has been launched to recognise the booming startup scene across the UK which has accelerated since the pandemic began. In 2020, when most of the world was shutting down, more than 400,000 startups were set up in Britain, with similar increases seen in other European countries.

There was stiff competition with over 2,500 applications received in response to the Startup Awards National Series’ first-ever call for entries.

Ando Eniwuimide, CEO and Founder of Happaning says: “It is always an honour to be recognised for our work making media more collaborative, immersive and authentic”.

Supported nationally by BT, EY, Dell & Intel, the programme will celebrate the achievements of the amazing individuals across the UK who have turned an idea into an opportunity and taken the risk to launch a new product or service.

Co-founded by the team behind the Great British Entrepreneur Awards, the new series follows the success of the Wales StartUp Awards, after organisers recognised the exceptional potential in the startup scene across the other British regions.

Professor Dylan Jones-Evans OBE, the creator of the StartUp Awards National Series, said: “New firms are important for generating economic prosperity, employment opportunities and innovation. Since 2016, the Wales StartUp Awards have celebrated this amazing annual contribution to our economy by entrepreneurs and the impact they have on communities across the nation.

“Given the sheer volume of phenomenal startups we’ve heard from since then, as well as the huge post-pandemic shift in people’s desires to take their career in a new direction and set up a business against the odds, we felt it was the right time to take the programme nationwide. We’ve been blown away by the standard of entries in this first year and truly look forward to crowning the winners in June.”

London Tech Week – Ones To Watch 2021 Showcase

If a picture tells a thousand words and video a thousand pictures… imagine what a thousand videos could tell us.

So… What’s Happaning?

Think Google street view, but with video; Happaning is an award-winning platform that lets you watch an event from any perspective, at any time and from anywhere in one immersive navigable experience.

We call this revolutionary media format, multi-Vantage-Videos, or simply ViiVids®. Our proprietary ViiVid technology lets viewers navigate between vantage points in real time or retrospectively, by simply swiping in the direction they wish to move in. ViiVids allow viewers to freely attend live events, explore global landmarks or relive past experiences as if they were actually present… our take on time travel. This also negates the need for travel emissions. while supporting attendance from those with disabilities or from disadvantaged backgrounds unable to physically travel.

The How…

Our proprietary tech synchronises multiple mobile and static video feeds by time, location and audio-visual queues with a real-time codec by leveraging the today’s most accessible technology; the smartphone. Adding Augmented Reality overlays, we deliver the ability to crowdsource immersive storytelling; something completely new to the UGC market, projected to reach $434.03 Billion by 2027 [VerifiedMarketResearch,2020]. Game-changing advances in Virtual Reality currently under development will offer the ability to look around AND move around within an event or narrative like never before.

The Why…

By nature, traditional Video media formats are limited to single perspectives, therefore open to abuse (deep-fakes, careless editing, deliberate misdirection) and delivering a restrictive viewing experience. Our block-chain style decentralised peer-to-peer codec verifies the time/place of the footage, detects post-production edits, then empowers viewers to switch (or pan) perspectives by gesturing in a desired direction, to gain a richer appreciation of what’s ‘happaning’. E.g. if you don’t believe what you’re seeing, swipe for another perspective. ViiVids® empower more immersive, collaborative and verifiable storytelling and viewing experiences; enabling more informed decisions regarding the truth of what’s shown. This makes ViiVids one of few viable counter measures against the impending deep-fake videos.
The Who… (Team)

The Who Else (Our Competition)

With >4.3bn daily consumers, the incumbent Video can be considered the main competitor to ViiVids®. But if a picture tells a thousand words and video a thousand pictures, then ViiVids tell a thousand stories. That’s to say, videos will compete with ViiVids in the way static pictures previously competed with moving images.
Additionally, we envisage 3 main areas of competition including Video platforms (Youtube etc.), Content providers (Netflix etc.), Social-media platforms (fb/insta, Snap, TikTok etc.). Where some content providers like MelodyVR and Youtube do offer 360 ̊ videos, viewers cannot move freely, are anchored to one spot or are moved autonomously by the fixed video perspective. ViiVids will merge traditional videos with 360 ̊ vantages into one immersive navigable experience, and leverage competitor interest as they present enormous potential for partnership opportunities.

How Far?

Having created a fully functional, award-winning (The Pitch UK 2019 People’s Choice)
proof-of-concept, we secured two arduous patent publications, both at home (UKIPO) and globally (WIPO PCT). We’ve since run a wildly oversubscribed B2C alpha trial into target demographics while securing B2B2C commercial partnership with award-winning content creators, journalists and a network of 300+ event vendors. We raised pre-seed funding last year and have recently secured our lead investor on our way to a £500K Seed.

Tech Crunch: Happaning aims to be a ‘Google Street View’ for video

A new startup called Happaning wants to make video a more immersive experience by allowing people to watch the same event from multiple perspectives. Or, as co-founder and CEO Andrew Eniwumide likes to say, it’s “Google Street View, but with video.” The company believes its unique technology offering these multi-vantage-point videos could ultimately do more than just introduce a new user experience for video — it could solve other issues with misinformation or deep fakes, for example, as there would be other, verified perspectives of the same scene that could be used to fact check any attempts at misleading others through video edits.

Some of its loftier goals in this area are further down the line, however.

Launching today at TechCrunch Disrupt 2021 as the “wild card” in the Startup Battlefield, Happaning’s early beta version will first introduce its concept of multi-vintage videos, or what it’s trademarked as “ViiVid” technology. This is a system where users create video content using its mobile app that is then combined alongside videos filmed at that same location at the same time.

While the system is not using blockchain technology to verify the videos in any way, there are some similarities with that concept. Happaning borrows from the blockchain’s idea of a decentralized network where many sources are contributing to something like a master ledger. But in Happaning, no single node has all the same information as another — that is, one person’s video is unlike anyone else’s. Together, however, they display a fuller truth about what took place at a given place and time.

The company has patented some concepts related to its technologies involving synchronizing multiple video streams and the user experience of swiping through different video perspectives, locally in the U.K., where the team is based, and with the World Intellectual Property Organization.

The initial use cases for such technology would be recording real-world events like weddings, concerts, sports events, protests or marches, or any others where a larger crowd of people would attend. Once recorded in Happaning, you can then swipe from one video to the next to see the same event from other angles and perspectives by tapping on markers inside the video. Imagine, for example, being able to swipe from a video filmed in the back of the concert looking down on the stage to a video in the front row.

Eniwumide says he came up with the idea for Happaning to solve the issues around how video is being abused to mislead people. He notes that the issue is widespread across social media, pointing to a report that indicates Facebook posts from misinformation sources were getting six times more engagement than those from reputable news sites.

“As time has moved on, storytelling media has become more and more sophisticated to the point where now we’ve got 360-degree videos. But we’re also seeing with videos, is the fact that they’re subject to abuse, they’re subject to careless editing, they’re subject to bias and even deep fakes,” Eniwumide says. He imagined that an app that could verify video content hadn’t been altered and was really taking place where it claimed to be, could be useful.

Eniwumide’s background includes over 12 years of experience as both a software developer and principal consultant at U.K. engineering firms including Detica and BAE Systems. He’s joined by CFO Leslie Sagay, CMO Joanna Steele, CTO Colin Agbabiaka and AJ Adesanya, who works on infrastructure. Most of the team, however, is not full time with the startup at this point.
